Leadership involves a complex interaction between three key actors: the leader, the followers, and the situation. Too often, leadership gurus over-simplify this problem by zeroing in on one of these three factors, i.e., either individual leader traits, or culture, or employee engagement. What we like about this is the valid data that you can collect and the resulting focused interventions that address the gaps identified. However, we dislike the oversimplification of such a complex problem, as it too often leads to unsatisfactory outcomes or no change at all. As such, our solutions look beyond the individual leader and consider the context as equally important.
